MWC 2019: SAP unveils Leonardo Internet of Things for industrial IoT

SAP unveiled SAP Leonardo Internet of Things and announced its cloud-to-cloud interoperability with Microsoft Azure IoT Hub.

The software giant touted SAP Leonardo IoT as an "all-encompassing technology that generates and drives digital transformation for Industrial IoT and Industry 4.0".  With a focus on Industrial IoT, the new offering will allow customers to gather insights from machines, products, supply chains, consumers, and partners, with SAP saying Leonardo IoT provides three "paths to innovation" for customers.

SAP Sets Blockchain Course by Mike Vizard: "SAP by the middle of 2018 plans to make an instance of a blockchain database available based on an instance of the open source Hyperledger project that will be primarily employed across multiple community clouds hosted by SAP. 

 SAP for now is providing access to a blockchain as a service offering via an early access program to both IT services providers and IT organizations such as Capgemini, Deloitte, GrainCorp, HCL Technologies, HERE Technologies, Moog Inc., Natura Cosméticos S.A., NetApp and PeerNova. Gil Perez, senior vice president for digital assets and the Internet of Things (IoT) at SAP, says the distributed ledger that SAP is making available on top of blockchain is part of the suite of IT services known as SAP Leonardo that SAP wraps around emerging technologies.

 The sunny Italian countryside rattles by at 350km an hour, but it’s not the speeds alone that make Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa trains impressive – it’s the hundreds of sensors beaming 5,000 data points a second into the cloud. 

 Trenitalia is working with SAP to harvest and process that data to completely reimagine train maintenance. At the moment, trains are pulled off the rails for a check-up after a certain number of kilometres or a set amount of time – not unlike taking your car in for an MOT.
